Why it was built is a mystery, it has been a pagan place of worship, an astronomical clock and a Bronze age burial ground. Its origins date back almost 5,000 years. Enjoy a full-day, guided tour in English and French. The green and peaceful Normandy with its picturesque fishing harbors and lovely resorts was also the stage of the operation Overlord.
At dawn of June 6, 1944, one of history’s most decisive battles, led by General Eisenhower, began with the Allied invasion of German-held Normandy. Travel through Normandy to Caen by the motorway.

Stop for a commented visit, film and lunch (drinks included) at the Memorial-Peace Museum of Caen. The landing beaches: this part of the Norman coast, once defended by the Atlantic Wall, was heroically pierced by the Allies during the landing on June 6, 1944.

Also stop at Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach. Saint-Laurent- visit of about one hour to the American Cemetery, where 9,386 Americans rest, guarded by the Spirit of the American Youth, a 22 foot-high bronze figure.

Your last stop is at Arromanches, former artificial harbor during the Landing of Normandy, today a lovely summer resort. Stop on the motorway back to Paris. Arrival is around 9.15 pm at Paris.

The Cotswolds

Stratford upon Avon

We then tour the Somme battlefield covering major sites from the calamitous first day through the whole five months of the battle. You see Delville Wood, the Welsh memorial at Mametz Wood, the huge Lochnagar mine crater, the sunken road where the Lancashire Fusiliers suffered terribly, the Pozieres battlefield and Windmill Hill (both important site for Australians), Courcelette, site of the first major use of tanks supporting Canadian troops, and the nearby the tank memorial. We include the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing and the Ulster Tower. An undoubted highlight, however, will be the incredibly preserved Beaumont Hamel battlefield site. For those who are continuing to Ypres the next day, it is possible to attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres this evening. Those who are departing the tour today will return to Lille before the Last Post ceremony.

A town steeped in history. In 75 AD, Isca Silurum, was established as a permanent garrison for the Second Augustan Legion at 5,600 strong, now called Caerleon, which translates to 'Fort of the Legions'. This area hides a wealth of Roman remains, along with Chester and York, Caerleon was one of the principle Roman military bases in Britain. The elite of the Roman army were based here, in what became a large Roman town. The extent of the remains here are impressive and Britain's most revealing Roman site. Guided tour of amphitheatre built in 90AD, Fortress Baths, and museum.
Our journey from Caerleon travels the route used by stagecoach passengers before railroads were built, along narrow roads with quaint stone cottages and coaching inns to our next stop, 5-star Celtic Manor Resort, host of the prestigious 2010 Ryder Cup (exterior view).
Built on the banks of the River Wye, Chepstow has the distinction of being the first castle in Britain to be constructed of stone, founded in 1067AD. Medieval town walls enclose Chepstow's narrow streets and the main road is straddled by the battlemented 13th century town gate which adds further to the town's charming historic character. The Wye Valley, is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visit in spring and you will find woods carpeted with bluebells, wild garlic and wood anemones, summer time the meadows come alive with wild flowers and autumn's cascade of golden colours. LUNCH STOP: Tintern Parva, a riverside village which nestles amongst the wooded slopes of the Wye Valley.

13th-century Tintern Abbey is one of the UK's top attractions. The medieval builders did an amazing job, truly a masterpiece of decorated Gothic architecture. The Cistercian abbey, now a majestic ruin, was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare and was active until the Dissolution of the Monasteries enacted by King Henry VIII. It is easy to see why this abbey, in its splendid setting, inspired poetry from William Wordsworth and was painted by Turner. Guided tour of the Abbey.

Leeds Castle
Heading out to Leeds Castle, we pass through Greenwich, home of the famous 'Cutty Sark' tea clipper and the Royal Observatory, and cross over the Greenwich Meridian.

Leeds Castle was described by Lord Conway as 'the loveliest castle in the world' and is set in the middle of a natural lake, surrounded by 500 acres of parkland and gardens. We will take you in before the doors open to the public, to experience its magic in an atmosphere of still tranquility. There will also be time to explore the castle grounds where you will find the ' Lady Baillie Garden' with views over the lake, an aviary and maze.


Canterbury Cathedral
Traveling through Kent, the county known as the 'Garden of England', we make our way to Canterbury to visit the Cathedral. This magnificent Cathedral is the most important church within the worldwide Anglican faith. The central 'Bell Harry Tower' dates back to 1498, and the crypt to the 11th Century. It is here where your guide will tell the story of the shocking murder of Archbishop Thomas Beckett in 1170 and there will also be time to explore the narrow streets of Canterbury. There will be an opportunity for lunch in Canterbury.

Dover
We continue our tour through the picturesque landscape of Kent dotted with unusual buildings and quaint little villages to Dover, where you'll see the famous White Cliffs standing 400 feet above sea level. Brooding above the White Cliffs is the sprawling Dover Castle still watching over the town 800 years on.

Cardiff Bay is the regeneration area created by the Cardiff Barrage which impounded the River Taff and River Ely to form a new 500 acre freshwater lake around the former dockland area. Enjoy a short walking tour and discover its maritime heritage, marvel at innovative architecture, alongside historical buildings.

The picturesque village of St Fagans is home to one of Europe's largest open-air museums. St Fagans National History Museum, set in 100 acres of countryside with over forty buildings that have been moved brick by brick from across Wales and re-erected in the museum. Buildings include an elegant mansion house, a quarryman's cottage, farmhouses, a terrace of six cottages, a toll-house and a Celtic village. We use the Castle Gardens entrance to nearby St. Fagans Castle for guided castle tour. Free time to explore the stunning formal gardens and buildings.

Llantwit Major, a town steeped in history and still retains an air of antiquity with its narrow streets and quaint stone cottages. St Illtud's Church, built on the site of the famous monastery of St Illtud founded in the 5th century, contains one of the most significant collections of Celtic stones in Wales. An inn reputed to date back to the 11th century formerly a banking house for the last Welsh Prince of Glamorgan. Lunch Stop.

Admission to Nash Point Lighthouse, designed by James Walker in 1832 and the last manned lighthouse in Wales. For over 160 years its light has done its job well as a sign to mariners to keep them clear of danger. Thirty seven metres high, spread over seven levels, delivering superb views of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and across the Bristol Channel. Information provided on ground floor level for any passengers not wanting to climb stairs.

Southerndown, part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. Access to the beach to take a closer look at the jurassic layered limestone cliffs which strangely resemble giant steps into the sea and give testament to the treacherous nature of a coast once infamous for its wrecks and smugglers. Also the design inspiration for Wales Millennium Centre at Cardiff Bay.

Nearby is Ogmore-by-sea and Wales' tallest sand dunes, which in 1961 was the location for filming scenes for Lawrence of Arabia. Nestling in the beautiful Ewenny Estuary is the original earthworks of the imposing 11th century Ogmore Castle. From the castle we cross the ancient stepping stones (optional) and Swing Bridge to Merthyr Mawr, an idyllic little settlement with an outstanding collection of thatched dwellings, beautifully positioned around an old village green.
