The Scottish Highlands are a wonderful wildlife haven – home to many species which are found nowhere else in the UK such as pine marten, capercaillie, wildcat, mountain hare and golden eagles. Species such as red squirrels, crossbill and crested tits can also be found here. At the coast, endearing sea otters feed amongst the kelp and there are healthy populations of both harbour and grey seals. The open moorland is home to bird species including wheatear, ringed ouzel, meadow pipit, hen harrier and buzzard. In October, the red deer rut is a highlight; the calls of the stags echo over the glens. We’ll go to places where these species thrive to try and spot as many as possible.
