Itinerary

Day 1 Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains

Heading south of Dublin, we travel through the Wicklow Mountains via the picturesque Sally Gap pass to our first stop at the famous Glendalough.

You follow the winding paths to Glendalough, site of an awe-inspiring 6th century monastic city with numerous churches, crosses and a well preserved stone tower. Founded by St Kevin the site is no stranger to myths and legends with some believing the saint himself banished a monster that lived in the lake. Fact or fiction there is no doubt that St Kevin chose a perfect location for this hub of early Christian learning, sitting nestled amongst hills and valleys formed by Ice Age glaciers. You bid farewell to this moving place and find a cosy spot for a spot of lunch in the traditional market town of Kilcullen.

After lunch you travel onwards to the Rock of Dunamase and the Celtic ruins of Dunamase Castle that sit in a defensive location surveying the ancient plains of County Laois. An early Christian settlement, the keen location couldn’t stand up to the pillaging Vikings in 842 when it transformed into one of the most important Anglo-Norman strongholds in Laois. Later, we cross the peat bogs and go to ‘Ireland’s Prettiest Village’, Adare. This quaint spot has a superb collection of thatched cottages and old structures, including the ruins of a 15th-century Franciscan Monastery. You’ll stop here for a short comfort break and some refreshments before moving on.

You depart County Limerick and enter County Kerry on your way to your home for the night in Dingle. There is time for a quick stop in the small village of Blennerville, home to Ireland’s largest windmill which is a quirky addition to the otherwise classically Irish skyline. You then head for the windswept Dingle Peninsula, one of the nation’s strongholds of Irish language and culture surrounded by roaring waves and epic cliff faces. We will stay in the town of Dingle for the next two nights where you can enjoy the infamous ‘hardwear pubs’ and the bustling bohemian atmosphere.

Your overnight accommodation will be in Dingle.

Day 2Wild Atlantic Way

Today, we’re right in the heartland of the Gaeltacht, the areas within Ireland where the Irish language is the principal tongue of the local people. The culture, history, and heritage of the Dingle Peninsula is fiercely protected and warmly shared with visitors. After a relaxed start to the day you set off with a open heart and mind ready to embrace the culture of this region. You arrive at Conor Pass where your guide will give you an outline for the day ahead.

This is a day of true Irish adventure. Your guide is a local expert after all, so leave it to them to show you the very best off the beaten track and iconic beauty spots along the Wild Atlantic Way.

You’ll have the chance to influence your day along with your tour mates, helping the guide craft your perfect day in the Dingle Peninsula.

Your day continues where you’ll be able to visit some of the most popular locations such as Tóchar Maothaithe, the Beehive Huts, Slea Head, and Gallarus Oratory.

But after all this exploring you’ll be needing a spot of lunch, yes? We know the perfect spot. In keeping with the day your guide will choose one of the local Gaeltacht (Irish Language speaking) villages of Ballyferriter OR Murreagh for a catch up on where you will head to next while you soak in the hospitality of the people.

With plenty of time on the road home for the evening to stop off at a few more sights, you will arrive in Dingle for another fun filled evening and a good night’s rest after a surprising, inspiring and packed day exploring one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines.

Your overnight accommodation will be in Dingle. (B)

Day 3Rock of Cashel & Killarney National Park

After your awe inspiring adventure yesterday you are ready to get back on the road again for your last day full of more incredible stories and sights. Before leaving the Dingle Peninsula, you’ll make a stop at Inch Beach. This is a wide stretch of sand that faces a beautiful view of our next destination, the Kerry mountains and the Killarney National Park.

Your journey takes you via the Torc Waterfall, a 20m high cascade of water that originates high in the mountains or maybe you will stop at Muckross House and Gardens, a 19th-century mansion set among mountains and woodland. There is plenty to admire about the lively town of Killarney. This thriving town on the shores of Lough Leane welcomes visitors all year round due to its incredibly picturesque location. We can’t think of a better backdrop for some free time and a leisurely lunch.

Perched on a outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale sits the Rock of Cashel, one of the most significant historical sites in the whole of Ireland. You will find yourself standing in awe, unable to have imagined a place that holds so much mystery and magic. The surviving buildings hold many wonders including the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland. You will explore the monuments to be found here, a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, and a fifteenth-century Tower House.

From here, it’s a relaxing drive with time to reflect on the past three days as you make your way back to Dublin for the early evening. (B)
