There’s an old Welsh saying: “The best shortage is a shortage of words”. When you travel through Snowdonia, the mountains leave you speechless. The castles’ battle-torn passageways are indescribable. And many destinations are as unpronounceable as they’re unbelievable. You venture through the inexpressibly beautiful valleys of a famous national park; discover a town designed like an Italian village; and learn about Chester, an English town first settled by the Romans.

Itinerary

Day 1Manchester - Conwy - South Stack Lighthouse - Beaumaris - Llandudno

We say goodbye to the urban bustle of Manchester and head straight for the border to a magical place: Wales. What do we know about Wales? Its tongue-twisting language is the oldest in Great Britain; it’s the land of castles, with over 600 across the country; and it’s a landscape of inescapable beauty. But there’s so much you don’t know, and you can’t know, until you explore it for yourself. So, let the adventure begin.

We head through the beautiful Welsh countryside and along the Conwy coastline until we reach the little town of Conwy. This gorgeous harbour town boasts a castle perched by the sea, the ‘world’s smallest house’, and a plethora of restaurants with delectable fish and chips, among other things. This is ideal, since Conwy is your lunch stop for the day, and we highly recommend splitting your time between the sights and the senses.

After you’ve soaked up the sea air, you cross the world’s first modern day suspension bridge onto Anglesey Island. Prior to its construction, cattle farmers would have to persuade their herd to swim across the Menai Straits on their way to market. But it was always worth it to visit the beauty of Anglesey Island, with yawning marshes and sandy beaches, limestone cliffs and beautiful lagoons, this island has it all. We head for the most westerly point of North Wales to marvel at the South Stack Nature Reserve. Luscious farmland meets rugged coastal cliffs, and the iconic lighthouse, known as Goleudy Ynys Lawd, has unbelievable views of the wild Irish Sea.

But that’s not all. We’ll stop in the lovely seaside town of Beaumaris, a town with a striking blend of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture types. With an idyllic pier, an impressive 12th-century castle, and pastel-coloured cottages, we’re a little bit in love with Beaumaris and think you’ll be too. We’ll also visit the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll for a quick photo stop. Then you travel back over the bridge and along the coastline to Llandudno. This Victorian seaside town is your overnight stop tonight and its beaches, pier and promenade make for the perfect evening stroll.

Your overnight accommodation will be in Llandudno.

Day 2 Llandudno - Harlech Castle - Portmeirion - Llandudno

Rise and shine to another adventurous day in Wales. We’ll pick you up from your accommodation and make our way into Snowdonia National Park. Today, it’s known by its local name Eryri National Park and within its 823 square miles you’ll find nine mountain ranges, wild mountain goats, thriving ecosystems of wildlife, and castles and other ancient monuments, among other things.

Our first stop is to one of our favourite castles in the whole of the UK: Harlech Castle. It boasts epic sea views and an amazing war-torn history that involves a lot of dynamite. Intrigued to know more? Take some time to explore this incredible monument before we jump back on the bus and head for our next destination.

We venture to one of the most charming and unique villages in Wales, Portmeirion. This town is the brainchild of Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis. He wanted to demonstrate how a naturally beautiful location could be developed without spoiling it. The result is a stunning piece of the Mediterranean transported into North Wales. You have free time here to explore and grab a bite to eat.

Back on the bus, it’s time for a scenic drive back to your accommodation. And as you wandered the promenade last night, as you munched on some local cuisine, did you wish you had more time in Llandudno? Good news, you’ll head back there for another night tonight and get to know this gorgeous seaside town even better. As we make our way back to Llandudno, we’ll make a few stops here and there depending on the group.

Your overnight accommodation will be in Llandudno. (B)

Day 3Llandudno - Llanberis Slate Museum - Llangollen - Chester - Manchester

The adventure continues and today you have the pleasure of visiting two countries in one day. After breakfast, a sleepy Eryri National Park greets you with a quiet morning hug and more of its best-of-the-best views, including the glistening Lake Padarn and other spectacular scenery. Our first big stop of the day is at Llanberis Slate Museum. The history of the second largest slate mine on the planet will stay in your memory for a long time and its Victorian workshops once employed over 3000 men.

There’s more beauty than you’re prepared for here in Wales, including the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley which is our next destination. We stop in the little town of Llangollen, situated along the quiet River Dee and backed by beautiful hill ranges. Have a wander, grab a bite to eat at one of the many cafes and restaurants, and fuel up for the rest of the day.

It’s time to say farewell to Wales for now (or ffarwel in their local language) as we head back into England to visit one of the country’s most historic towns, Chester. It has the most complete city walls in Britain, not to mention the oldest racecourse and the largest Roman Amphitheatre. And then there’s the 1000-year-old cathedral brimming with medieval carvings. There’s plenty to do here, but we’d advise you to head to the Cathedral, because you could spend a whole week in this fine building and not get bored.

There are quite a few new memories for you now, aren’t there? Memories make the best souvenirs. The question is: which story will you tell your friends and family first when you get home? You’ll have time to reminisce on your favourite moments as we head back to Manchester, where we arrive in the early evening. (B)
