Straddling the border with Scotland, Northumberland National Park claims to have England’s cleanest rivers, clearest air and darkest skies. It also has a great variety of scenic landscapes from green Cheviot Hills to the North Sea battered coast, lined with sandy bays. On this break you’ll spend time exploring Lindisfarne with its iconic priory ruins which date back to Norman times before heading off to see some of the area’s picturesque villages and Flodden Battlefield where a bloody battle took place in the 16th century. There’s time to enjoy the beauty of the Cheviot Hills and a visit to a Victorian house which was the first in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity thanks to its inventor owner. Head inland to historic battle sites and open moorland. Castles at Bamburgh and Warkworth – one of the largest, most impressive fortresses in northern England – and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall give a glimpse into the area’s history. The magnificent mansion house of Wallington and the peaceful Island of Lindisfarne offer calmer, more reflective destinations.
