Itinerary

Day 1Stonehenge and the Jurassic Coast

Experience the ancient past brought to life today, as you’re going visit one of the United Kingdom’s most iconic historic sites: Stonehenge. Departing from London, we journey through the heart of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, a major Anglo-Saxon realm that played a key part in bringing the country together as a single nation.

Your first stop of the day is the ancient site of Stonehenge. You’ll have the whole morning to explore the visitor centre and get up close to the Neolithic stones, which have stood for over 5,000 years. Was it an ancient temple, an astronomical calendar, or perhaps the work of Merlin’s magic? Will you uncover the mystery behind why this monument was built?

Next, the adventure takes us south through some of England’s most picturesque landscapes. As we approach the Dorset coast, the landscape shifts to the iconic cliffs and rolling hills of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This dramatic coastline is famous for its incredible geological formations, where the cliffs are full of fossils from the age of dinosaurs. We travel along the coast to the Durdle Door, an iconic limestone arch, carved by the sea over millions of years. Whether you explore this ancient shore or just relax on the beach, marvel at rock layers that tell the story of an ever-changing landscape. After this escape into nature, we head to Exeter.

Once the most westerly fortified settlement in Roman Britain, the historic city of Exeter is famous for ancient city walls, a Norman castle, gothic cathedral, Tudor heritage, a quayside, and a vibrant commercial and restaurant area. You’ve got free time in the evening, and you can decide what to do. Will you take a leisurely evening stroll along the river? Or perhaps visit one of traditional pubs like The Old Firehouse or The Exeter Arms? No matter what you choose, there’s another evening in this amazing city for you to enjoy tomorrow.

Your overnight accommodation will be in Exeter.

Day 2Dartmoor National Park and Tavistock

We leave Exeter and travel to the heart of the remote windswept magnificence of Dartmoor National Park, to Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Keep your eyes peeled for native ponies grazing close to the striking rock formations and other diverse flora and fauna.

Our first stop is Widecombe-in-the-Moor, a picture-perfect village nestled among the rugged hills and ancient stone tors of Dartmoor. Stroll through its charming streets, admire the striking St Pancras Church, and take in the serene beauty and peaceful atmosphere of this historic spot. Next, we journey through Dartmoor’s vast, open landscapes to Clapper Bridge, an ancient stone bridge that has stood the test of time, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past and its close relationship with the land. Next stop is Tavistock for lunch, so make sure to treat yourself to the famous cream tea that is said to have been invented there.

Start your exploration with a true taste of Devon—cream tea. This delightful treat consists of fresh scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam, all accompanied by a pot of tea. When you’ve finished, walk off the calories and wander through the town’s charming streets, lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings, and visit the Tavistock Abbey ruins, a reminder of the town’s medieval past. We then travel back through the windswept expanses of the moors back to Exeter to explore some of its highlights, like Exeter Cathedral. Step inside of this medieval masterpiece to be greeted by the soaring, intricate stone vaults and delicate stained-glass windows that have stood for over 900 years.

After soaking in the serene beauty of Exeter Cathedral, take the evening to explore the city’s charming streets. Wander through the historic center, enjoy a meal at one of the many local restaurants, or relax at a cosy pub, where the city’s vibrant atmosphere comes alive as the sun sets.

Your overnight accommodation will be in Exeter. (B)

Day 3Glastonbury and Bath

Bid farewell to Exeter as we set off towards Glastonbury, a town renowned not only for its world-famous music festival but also for its legendary ties to King Arthur and the Holy Grail.

Our first stop takes us to Glastonbury, a historic town in Somerset brimming with charm. Take time to wander its quaint streets and enjoy an early lunch, perhaps sampling some local delicacies. Known worldwide for its summer music festival, Glastonbury is also steeped in legend. Many believe it is the final resting place of King Arthur. If you’re a fan of Arthurian legends, be sure to visit Glastonbury Tor, a hill that some say marks the mythical island of Avalon. From here, we’ll continue our journey to the stunning city of Bath.

Visiting Bath is like stepping into a living piece of history, where elegant Georgian architecture blends seamlessly with natural beauty. As a UNESCO World Heritage city, Bath is famous for its ancient Roman Baths and healing waters, as well as its graceful streets. Don’t miss the iconic Royal Crescent, with its sweeping, curved facade, and other grand landmarks throughout the city that have served as stunning backdrops in period dramas and films. After soaking in Bath’s timeless charm, it’s time to head back to London, passing through the scenic North Wessex Downs with its rolling hills and peaceful countryside along the way.

Reflect on the stunning Georgian architecture, the legendary sites, and the natural beauty you’ve explored during your tour as you travel back to London. This bustling capital awaits with its iconic landmarks, lively atmosphere, and endless possibilities for discovery, so enjoy the evening of exploration on your own. (B)
